Camping brand Boutique Camping offers luxury tents and glamping gear to customers in the UK, the USA and Australia.

Founders Ollie and Fiaz developed the company out of their own frustrations after a succession of soggy camping trips. With a passion for the outdoors and music festivals, it took one more annoyingly unpleasant night in a tent in the summer of 2010 for them to realise just how they could do things better themselves. Boutique Camping was born.

Fast forward 12 years, they had a major web presence, and had become one of the UK’s leading glamping retailers. With a flourishing business, only one thing stood in the way of their insatiable growth - their website.

The Challenge.

Previously, each branch of the Boutique Camping website had been built and managed using VisualSoft. While it had been valuable to them during the early years of their online existence, the custom nature of the platform was causing problems for Boutique Camping as the business grew.

VisualSoft was unintuitive to use, and required Boutique Camping’s staff to learn HTML to be able to change even simple settings and page content. Adding apps and integrations became a costly and convoluted process; even installing a simple Klarna integration would have taken up to three weeks. With the business rapidly growing, there was so much they wanted to do to level up their website, but simply couldn’t due to the growing restrictions of the VisualSoft platform.

With these challenges in mind, Kubix was tasked with migrating Boutique Camping to the future of e-commerce: Shopify Plus. We knew Shopify Plus would enable them to do everything they wanted to do with their online store with ease, and in a fraction of the time it would have taken with their old platform.

But with two distinct websites, one for the UK and one for the US, as well as an enormous range of products with an intricate array of variants, this migration was bound to be a challenge, but one we were more than ready to take on.

It was time to light the campfire.

Design Process.

After learning about the business, the next step in any project at Kubix is to hand it over to our design team. Our in-house designers got to work with Boutique Camping’s own designer to create a shared vision for the future of the Boutique Camping website.

Boutique Camping’s main priorities were to create a unique, nature-focused website that incorporated customisation with a quiz to help customers choose the right tent for them. They wanted a brand that reflected the cosy comfort Boutique Camping’s products brought to customers seeking to escape to a weekend under the stars.

The design went through many variations, and the process continually evolved over the course of the project as the team at Boutique Camping had new ideas and adapted the brief to achieve their vision.

Our team and Boutique Camping’s designers soon found themselves working together in perfect harmony, with a process of continual evolution that ultimately resulted in a finished product that stood out from the crowd.

"I truly enjoyed working with Joe and the team at Kubix Media on the migration of our site from a Magento-like agency based e-commerce platform to Shopify(Plus). Our project was far more than a standard one and it involved a few complex custom solutions and troubleshooting while navigating some pretty rough seas too at times, Kubix was able to soldier through with us in this effort while both guiding and reassuring us along the way. We really appreciated the flexibility the company has shown to our ever evolving project and I think the result speaks for itself for anyone checking our site as of June 2023. We gained great value from the investment we made with them and I would recommend them as migration specialists. Thank you!" - Matteo, E-Commerce Manager

The Migration.

With design well underway, our attention shifted to the migration itself. This migration was set to be so much more than a migration - with international sites and a host of bespoke features to incorporate, our development and operations teams rolled up their sleeves ready to get stuck in.

The enormous choice of tents and the even more expansive selection of product variants posed a unique challenge, but also an opportunity to push the limits of Shopify, while letting our expertise shine.

Using a blend of carefully selected Shopify apps and bespoke code from Kubix’s development team, we created an incredibly feature-rich website that offers the ultimate in product customisation and customer personalisation.

We incorporated a product quiz using the ZooVu app, an integration used by the likes of Microsoft, Dyson and KitchenAid to create ‘guided selling’ experiences. For Boutique Camping, the quiz guides users through a series of questions and scenarios to find the perfect tent for them. They can select where they intend to use their tent, whether they’re going to a festival or taking a trip, how much space they’ll have, and how many people will sleep in the tent. There’s also an array of more conventional options such as different colour and fabric choices.

Like a virtual personal shopper, the quiz produces the perfect pick for the customer, generating a dedicated iFrame on the page with product images, specs and a direct link to both the product page and the option to add to cart. This gives every customer a truly personalised experience, speeding up the decision making process and ultimately generating sales for the camping giant.

Our team and Boutique Camping came up with new ideas and as new opportunities presented themselves to us. One of those opportunities was the launch of Shopify Markets. With dedicated international sites part of the initial brief, the arrival of Markets couldn’t have come at a better time. We seized upon its groundbreaking features to create dedicated storefronts for the UK, US and Australia, featuring automatic currency changes and localisation, all without the hassle of managing multiple websites for each market.

Unique Features.

With so many product variants on offer, we devised an innovative solution to go beyond the limit of three product variant options on Shopify product pages. Our developers built a dedicated navigation menu for products like bell tents that come with a wide array of variants. The special ‘choose shape’ menu is unlike anything to be found by default in a Shopify theme.

Another unique feature is the implementation of a variant retainer. A what, you ask? Allow us to explain: take the Classic Bell Tent, one of Boutique Camping’s most popular products. With a variant retainer, the Classic Bell Tent now sits within a single product page, from which users can see and apply every single kind of variant, with differences in size, fabrics and colours to choose from. But that’s not all.

With such a variety of design choices available, each of the variants is so distinct that they deserve their own product page, and as far as the user can see, they do. Every type of variant appears to have its own product page within the relevant product collection, but upon clicking on one of these, our variant retainer process directs users back to the single product page for Classic Bell Tents, simply applying the selected variant differences to that product.

This prevents the need for dozens of product pages, creating a much more streamlined experience for customers, and is equally just as valuable for SEO with all variants pointed to one unified URL.

Apps & Integrations.

The infinite expandability of Shopify means Boutique Camping are now able to utilise the latest in e-commerce tech from a variety of Shopify app partners.

We boosted customer loyalty with CRM tools from the likes of Rebuy and integration with email marketing from Klaviyo, alongside the quiz tool from ZooVu mentioned earlier. We also used the Order Deadline app to make it easy for customers to see exactly when to expect their order before making a purchase, reducing the impact of one of the foremost barriers to conversions - doubts about delivery times.

Apps not only overhauled features on the customer-facing side of the site; we also implemented back-end apps to support Boutique Camping’s business operations such as Mintsoft to help transform their inventory tracking management.

Our developers made use of a special API dedicated solely to accurately updating the “trees planted” counter in the header of the website, keeping track of the positive environmental impact Boutique Camping and its customers have with every purchase, in real time. Sowing the seeds of not only e-commerce success.
