“To a new world of gods & monsters!” - The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

Creep-O-Rama is an American retailer of horror movie merchandise, founded by friends James and Justin in 2018. From t-shirts to hats, hoodies to wall hangings, Creep-O-Rama sells a wide range of clothing and other collectibles to a community of loyal fans. All of their products are custom designed for Creep-O-Rama by a collective of freelance artists and illustrators around the world.

Finding themselves on an ageing Shopify theme, their online store was quickly becoming as stuck in the past as the spirit world. Thankfully, James and Justin were friends with a competing retailer Fright Rags, a previous Kubix project client. Having successfully redesigned Fright Rags’ online store back in 2021, and as a cornerstone of the horror community, they recommended our services to the Creep-O-Rama team. We set about a complete Shopify theme refresh and new look for their store.

"Overall, we're incredibly happy with how the website came together. Each section lives up to what we initially envisioned for the project, and the custom sections look fantastic. Mia was an absolute pleasure to work with, and we can't speak highly enough about her. She navigated our many questions and ideas and always had a solution ready. Her communication and work ethic made this project a breeze."

"It was beauty that killed the beast.” - King Kong (1933)

Creep-O-Rama’s old website lacked colour, and while darkness is pretty key for a horror-themed store, our design team wanted to explore other ‘horrific’ colour palettes to bring out important UX features like buttons, announcement bars and product variants. Taking inspiration from many of the movies that inspire their products, pops of red, green and purple were chosen to inject some macabre style into the pages of their new site.

Our next source of inspiration came from Creep-O-Rama itself. Their podcast was (and still is) a hit amongst the horror community, and with it came its own sufficiently ghoulish branding. It was also not very visible on their website, instead with greater prominence on their (equally as successful) social media channels.

These realisations gave us two ideas: infuse the podcast branding into the website, and turn the new Creep-O-Rama store into an online community hub for fans of all things grisly.

“It’s Alive!” - Frankenstein (1931)

Soon our work began to come to life, with intense collaboration between Kubix’s designers, developers and the Creep-O-Rama team. We developed bespoke features such as spooky green highlights that animate on hover, as well as custom illustrated ‘blood splash’ sale badges to really bring their product ranges to life.

As we approached completion, we started to address the opportunity of greater community interaction and engagement. Kubix developed product pages with space dedicated specifically to showcasing background information on relevant movies and TV shows, with fun facts, details of actors and production notes. We also added a dedicated space for artists, with a picture, social media links and a bio giving customers a greater connection to the person behind the prints.

These ties with the movies weren’t only confined to community building. We implemented a custom product recommendation engine, linking products associated with a particular movie series, giving customers recommendations of other items related to the movies in question, inspiring additional purchases and increasing conversions for Creep-O-Rama.

Last but not least, we built a dedicated feed page for their podcast, giving it much greater prominence, unifying what was already a great source of content into their online store.

“We all go a little mad sometimes.” - Psycho (1960)

This new website reflects Creep-O-Rama’s place at the heart of the horror movie fan community. Much like Norman Bates in Psycho, this project allowed us to unleash a little of our own craziness, relishing the challenge to explore our creativity in a world of grisly tales.

We couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve created, and the Creep-O-Rama team couldn’t be more happy (or horrified, in a good way) with their new site. Forget skeletons in the closet - we’ve got Creep-O-Rama clothing in ours.
